What is a Hospitality Trainee?

Hospitality trainees perform a range of tasks in hospitality establishments, which vary depending on the traineeship stream they undertake. A hospitality trainee can specialise in Asian cooking, kitchen operations or general hospitality.

What kind of work do they do?

  • Planning menus, purchasing, preparing, cooking (including patisserie) and serving various types of foods
  • Quality control and managing finances
  • Food service, beverage service or catering
  • Front office, housekeeping, kitchen service
  • Gaming (must be over 18)

How do I get into this occupation?

Complete a Hospitality traineeship. Usually, you will need at least Year 10 with reasonable results in English and Maths. You may be able to start this traineeship while you are still at school.

How will I know if it's for me?

You will enjoy interacting with people from all cultures and walks of like. You may have a creative flair which you can express in preparing and displaying food or table and room decoration. Working broken shifts, long hours and being on your feet won't bother you, and you are level-headed and calm in what can be a busy and pressured environment.
