What is a Horticulture Trainee?

Horticulture trainees perform a range of tasks which vary depending on the traineeship stream they undertake. A horticulture trainee can specialise in landscaping, retail or wholesale nursery, turf management, parks & gardens etc.

What kind of work do they do?

  • Maintaining plants and planted areas
  • Operating tractors and other equipment and machinery
  • Harvesting and treating plants
  • Constructing horticultural features
  • Applying chemical and biological agents
  • Maintaining irrigation and drainage systems
  • Constructing and/or maintaining outdoor sporting venues such as cricket wickets, tennis courts, golf greens etc.

How do I get into this occupation?

Complete a Horticulture traineeship. Usually, you will need at least Year 10 with reasonable results in English and Maths. You may be able to start this traineeship while you are still at school.

How will I know if it's for me?

You will be an outdoors person who loves to work with plants, turf, soil and associated equipment. If you have a creative flair, you will be able to express it through the opportunity to landscape, build water features, retaining walls etc.
